Pac-Man High Score Guide
A Pac-Man high score is not luck. It is the product of a scoring table you can learn in a minute and a handful of routing habits that take a few runs to build. This guide covers both, using the exact values used by the game on this site.
Where the scoring here differs from the 1980 arcade machine, the difference is called out — so you know which numbers apply to your run and which belong to the original cabinet.
How Pac-Man Scoring Works on pacman.love
| Event | Points | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Pellet | 1 point | Every dot in the maze. Clearing all of them ends the level, so pellets are both score and progress. |
| Power pellet | 1 point | Worth the same as a normal pellet here — its value is the frightened phase it triggers, not the points. |
| Ghost eaten while frightened | 10 points | Flat rate, no doubling. Four ghosts on one power pellet is 40 points. |
| Spare life at the end of the run | 50 points each | Added once, when the run finishes. You start with four spares, so a flawless run banks 200 bonus points. |
Your final score is the pellets and ghosts you banked during the run plus 50 for every spare life remaining. That total is compared with the best score saved in your browser and shown on the end screen.
Original Arcade Scoring vs This Version
The 1980 arcade machine paid 10 points per dot, 50 per power pellet, and doubled ghost values inside a single frightened phase — 200, 400, 800 and 1,600, so clearing all four ghosts on one pellet was worth 3,000 points. Bonus fruit added 100 to 5,000 depending on the level.
This version uses a flatter table: 1 point per pellet and 10 per ghost, with no fruit and no doubling. The practical consequence is important — you cannot win a run with one spectacular four-ghost chain. Survival and clearing mazes are what move the number.
Strategies to Beat Your Pac-Man High Score
1. Clear pellets before you hunt ghosts
A maze holds several hundred pellets and each is a point; a full four-ghost chain is 40. Route for total pellet coverage first and treat ghost eating as a bonus that happens along the way.
2. Bank your lives — they are worth 50 each
Four spare lives carried to the end are 200 points, which is more than five full ghost chains. Any risky detour that saves you twenty pellets but costs a life is a losing trade.
3. Save power pellets for pressure, not for points
Ghosts stay frightened for a long window — long enough to clear a whole corner in safety. Leave the corner pellets untouched until two ghosts converge on you, then take one and clear the area you have been avoiding.
4. Corner tightly and use the tunnels
Pac-Man moves faster than the ghosts here, so distance is gained on turns rather than straights. Queue the next direction just before a junction, and remember that a side tunnel resets a chase by putting the whole board between you and a pursuer. Check which mazes have two tunnels.
5. Learn one route per maze
Consistency beats improvisation. Pick a lap for each of the twelve layouts — outer ring, then the middle band, then the ghost house lanes — and repeat it. Low-junction mazes especially punish improvised turns because escape routes are long.
6. Know how the ghosts actually target you
In this version all four ghosts take the shortest available path toward your current tile, so they bunch up and arrive from predictable directions. That makes baiting effective: pull them into one lane, then break away through a junction they have all committed past. Read the ghost behavior guide.
Pac-Man High Score FAQ
- What is a good Pac-Man high score?
- On pacman.love a full clear of all twelve mazes is worth roughly 2,500–3,500 points depending on how many ghosts you eat and how many lives you finish with. Anything above 1,500 means you are clearing several mazes per run.
- How many points is a ghost worth in Pac-Man?
- In this version every ghost eaten during a frightened phase is worth a flat 10 points. The original 1980 arcade machine instead doubled the value within a single power pellet: 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 points.
- Do leftover lives add to your Pac-Man score?
- Yes. When the run ends, 50 points are added for each spare life still in reserve, so surviving mazes cleanly is worth more than farming ghosts carelessly.
- Is the Pac-Man high score saved?
- Your best final score is stored in your browser's local storage, so it survives reloads on the same device and browser. Clearing site data resets it.
